Digital Career Advice - Promotion

Digital Career Advice: are your ready for a promotion?

Looking for some solid digital career advice? Distinguishing the difference between wanting a promotion, and being ready for one, is an important thing to think about. Feeling that your career is progressing is a great feeling – but you want to ensure this progression is happening at the right moment.

We wanted to give you some food for thought! Here are some questions to ask yourself before making that next step.

Are you ready to make a difference?

Making a positive impact and difference is important as you progress in a company. Reflect on your journey so far…what have you done that has made a big difference?

Now think about what your promotion would mean for the company. What will you do differently with increased responsibility? How can you adapt to your colleagues in this new position? If you can answer these questions confidently, then you are on the right track.

Are you ready to manage people?

A big aspect of a promotion might be taking on managerial responsibilities. Sounds good, right? However, there is so much to consider. It is not just about being able to give direction. You have to consider the team’s happiness in their role and who is best at each task. Motivating them will only help improve their performance. Remember, as a manager, it is not just your own career you are nurturing anymore! If you still need more time to do this, are you ready to do so for a team?

If you feel it’s something you need more time to perfect, show support to your colleagues and allow people to see your qualities as a manager.

Are you in the right place to progress?

This is such an important question when it comes to career progression. If you are ready in yourself, that’s great! However, is your current company able to accommodate your long term career goals? If you’re not sure, could your step up the career actually be destined to take place elsewhere?

You do not want to accept a promotion only to realise the environment isn’t quite right. Even if you’ve been with a company for a while, changing the dynamics of your role is a huge deal. Confiding in senior management is a good place to start, especially if they too made the transition to manager within the company.
